World Literatures – Fabula 2011

At the threshold of spring, before the closing of the sumptuous offer of Ljubljana – World Book Capital, stands the festival World Literatures – Fabula 2011. After the lavish edition of the last year, it again focuses on the first-rate literature and prominent writers. From 4 to 22 April, we will be proud to host César Aira, Niccolò Ammaniti, Per Olov Enquist, Cristoph Ransmayr, Drago Jančar and Margriet de Moor. We will enter their worlds through books and films based on them, through sounds, fairy tales and images of their countries as well as through their own words about their creativity.

The expert thread of the festival will the question of Islam examined with the help of the connoisseurs of this subject from Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Turkey, which will be the guest country of the poetry and translation project The International Within the Local. This year’s international symposium will focus on Edvard Kocbek, whose susceptibility to complexity and paradoxes of human psychological structure and social existence often made him a victim of the ideologically uniform times. The festival includes an awarding ceremony – Dnevnikova fabula prize will be awarded for the sixth time in a row.

From congress halls and classical literary scenes, Fabula 2011 will also move to hospitals, homes for the elderly, crisis centres, and reflect the life in the streets through a celebrated initiative of the homeless, Kralji ulice magazine. Elementary and secondary school pupils will be encouraged to read good books through contests and seminars.

In April, at the end of its period of holding the book capital title, Ljubljana will flourish in a cosmopolitan spirit. Come and savour it!
