It’s fun to read comics, but it’s even better to create them. We invite you to attend a World Literatures – Fabula 2016 creative comic workshop mentored by graphic designer and illustrator Samira Kentrić. Through discussion, the mentor will introduce the participants to the comic medium. This will be followed by a brainstorming session for ideas and later by the creation of short comics on the subject of “THE NEWCOMERS”, which is also the focus of this year’s festival. The workshop will introduce the participants to the basics of comic language and help them play with the possibilities offered by comic drawing. The objective of the workshop is for groups of participants to create short comics. Everybody is welcome at the workshop – those who like to draw, as well as those who prefer writing. You can apply as an individual or as a group. The participants will meet with the mentor on three occasions:

at the location of the Design and Photography High School (Gosposka 18, Ljubljana).
The workshop will conclude and the best comics teams will be announced at 17:00, on Thursday, March 3, at the Vodnik Homestead (Vodnikova 65, Ljubljana), which will also exhibit the comics.

Between 13:00 and 16:00, on Saturday, March 5, authors of the winning comic, mentored by graffiti artist Jurij Lozić (Zek Collective), will paint their comic on a public wall in the centre of Ljubljana for passers-by to see.

The number of workshop participants is limited.

SUMMARY

Documentary Identity Smugglers has the structure of a road movie. The film follows Ervin Hladnik Milharčič, a native of Nova Gorica and Slovenia’s finest journalist, travelling both sides of today’s Slovenian-Italian border, the former “transit pass area”, in his Defender. The area is the meeting point of the Latin and Slavic worlds, of Central Europe and the Mediterranean, and Milharčič tries to show us what used to be mixed, exchanged and smuggled, how the situation has changed and what positive impact this has had for the people who live there.

Milharčič drives through some towns and makes stops in others, his winding journey taking him from Predel to Sečovlje – across Sinji vrh and through Tolmin, Kambreško, Špeter Slovenov, Topolovo, Nova Gorica and Gorizia, Trieste and Izola. On the way there, we meet madrigal singers Tminski madrigalisti, Drago Mislej - Mef and Iztok Mlakar. Milharčič also visits the Assumption mass in Gorizia and attends the May Day celebration on the 70^th anniversary of the liberation of Trieste with the Trieste-based Pinko Tomažič partisan choir. Moving on, we get to see Slovene women who worked as nannies in Alexandria, a monument to an Azerbaijani partisan, the Lukčeva House, the Slovene Multimedia Window Museum (SMO), a metal music festival in the centre of Tolmin and other wonders born out of the mixing of the two cultures. The world on the border is like an endless landscape under an open sky and with an open mind. The documentary pieces together a mosaic of one of the central themes of our time: life on the border, cultural differences and the question of how to deal with them.

The film is distinguished by wonderful cinematography, which is the work of Latif Hasolli, a young photography director from Kosovo. The soundtrack was created by singer-songwriter Drago Mislej - Mef and Elvis Šahbaz, and the film’s sound was edited by Darko Spasovski from Macedonia.

Bookworms and fashion fans are thus invited to come to the Fabula Book and Accessories Exchange on the first and last Sunday of the festival. We’ll exchange books for other books, accessories for books and accessories for other accessories.

Join us between 10:00 and 14:00, on February 28 and March 6, at DLUL Gallery, Breg 22, Ljubljana

Everybody can bring up to five books and up to five accessories. Children are welcome as well!

Please pick the books you’d like to exchange thoughtfully and only bring those you’ve already read! At the gallery, the books will be sorted according to their genres and offered to visitors.

The events at the gallery will have two guests; actor Marko Mandić at 11:00, on Sunday, February 28, and writer and journalist Vesna Milek at 11:00, on Sunday, March 6. They will join us for brunch and talk about books and reading to Tina Košir Mazi.

It’s going to smell like good books and fashion, as well as coffee and desserts. If the weather is sunny and warm, we’ll also hang out in front of the gallery.

Discussion of the central topic of the World Literatures – Fabula 2016 festival, The Newcomers , with Jean-Claude Milner, Alenka Zupančič, Peter Vermeersch, Igor Štiks, Teofil Pančić and Srećko Horvat
(in English, with simultaneous interpretation in Slovene)

The international discussion was conceived based on the Slovenian intellectual and social elites’ general ignorance regarding the phenomenon of refugees (who reached Slovenia in early autumn and remain the social topic of the day). The discussion will host compelling critical thinkers from all across Europe, from Serbia to France, who will examine the Slovenian and international reactions to the current wave of migrants.

The discussion will proceed from an essay authored by Peter Vermeersch at an artist residency in Ljubljana from December 2015 to January 2016, a time he used primarily to observe the events on Slovenian borders. We should also point out that this will also be the first time for Slovenia to host the renowned French philosopher, political thinker and one of the most prominent living structural linguists, Jean-Claude Milner (1941).

Discussion participants: Igor Štiks as both moderator and guest (Štiks is a Croatian writer and essayist with Bosnian roots, a doctor of political science and a long-time researcher at the University of Edinburgh; a co-organizer of the famous Subversive festival in Zagreb and of the Open University Sarajevo), J.-C. Milner (French philosopher and essayist, one of the most prominent living proponents of the Lacan school of structuralism, also known for his essays on anti-Semitism in European history and culture and as an investigator of the current socio-political situation), Srećko Horvat (Croatian philosopher, journalist and activist, author of a number of books including the oft-translated What Does Europe Want? (Što Europa želi, 2013) that he co-authored with Slavoj Žižek; Horvat is also the cofounder and former head of the Croatian Subversive Festival ), Peter Vermeersch (essayist, professor of political science at the University of Leuven near Brussels specializing in Central and Eastern Europe, author of “Essay on the Wire”, written specially for Fabula), Alenka Zupančič (philosopher of the Ljubljana School of Psychoanalysis whose doctoral work had been mentored by A. Badiou, author of numerous monographs that have been translated to other languages and a perceptive analyst of Slovenian and European society), Teofil Pančić (Serbian essayist, journalist, reporter and columnist of Vreme, his visit will be accompanied by the publication of his essay collection/travelogue Viktor Bubanj Boulevard (Aleja Viktorja Bubnja).

Matthias Göritz (1969) is a German novelist, poet and translator. Among other languages, Göritz also translates from Slovene (Šteger, Pahor).

His novel Dreamers and Sinners, published in 2013 by the reputable C. H. Beck publishing house, tells the story of a young journalist who gets the opportunity to interview a key personality of German film - an ageing, somewhat mysterious producer who has, plagued by an illness, put all his money and ideas into a film project called Gleiwitz, after a Polish town where the Germans tried to act out the beginning of World War II. The lead female role would supposedly be taken by Nicole Kidman and the film would be directed by Ridley Scott. However, the project hits a snag and the media are fishing for dirty details, while the old man plays cat and mouse with the interviewer, who is also not as disinterested as he had seemed. In spite of everything, the great secret of the producer's life gradually unfolds, and he and the journalist slowly establish a special kind of confidential relationship that results in a surprising twist. Göritz's tense and dynamic dialogue-based novel full of references that are always clever and sometimes amazingly entertaining tells a vivid story about fathers and sons and examines the problem of art at the crossroads of the forces of business, mass viewership and the truth.

Discussion and screening

The children who traversed Slovenia in a single month in late 2015 – about 62,000 – could fill over 200 elementary schools. A quarter of the people applying for asylum in Europe are minors. Can they be helped, and if they can, how can we help them deal with their traumatic experience, with their loss and their stressful situation, how can we make their recovery easier and quicker and help them become more resistant to their trauma? How can we integrate child refugees into the local environment? The issue will be examined by Anica Mikuš Kos and Mirjam Milharčič Hladnik in a discussion hosted by Marija Zidar.

The one-hour discussion will be followed by a screening of Waiting for Happiness (2002), a film by acclaimed Mauritanian director Abderrahmane Sissako (Timbuktu, 2014). Through the story of 17-year-old Abdullah who is waiting on the Mauritanian coast to be allowed entry into Europe, the film presents the conflict between Western civilization and the local African traditions.

Anica Mikuš Kos, a specialist of child psychiatry, has invaluable real-life experience, as she has been doing humanitarian work in areas of crisis all over the world for over 20 years. Even in her eighties, Mikuš Kos, who had herself lived through the ravages of World War II, still heads programmes of psycho-social rehabilitation of child refugees in war-torn areas that have recently included Kurdistan, Afghanistan and Gaza. Her work of strengthening people’s internal coping resources was also crucial during the wars in Bosnia and Kosovo.

Mirjam Milharčič Hladnik, a sociologist and Research Counsellor at the Slovenian Migration Institute of the Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts, has been involved with migration studies for years and has recently been focusing on the integration of migrants. She gives lectures at the universities in Ljubljana and Nova Gorica, as well as internationally, mainly in Germany and Norway. In the context of migration studies, Milharčič Hladnik is mostly interested in interdisciplinary approaches that combine historiography, sociology and feminism.

Marija Zidar is a journalist and screenwriter (Childhood (Otroštvo, 2009), Talking Heads (Govoreče glave, 2010), Hungry for Rebellion (Lačni upora, 2013/14), all directed by Dušan Moravec). She has directed the featurette documentary Identity Smugglers (Tihotapci identitete, 2015) where she also teamed up as co-screenwriter with Ervin Hladnik Milharčič, the protagonist of the documentary. As both director and screenwriter, Zidar is currently developing a feature documentary titled Avenge, a documentary thriller/drama that explores the consequences of anarchy and lawlessness in Albania.

Among other things, her photos illustrate the books written by her husband, Cees Nooteboom, acclaimed Dutch author and another guest of this year’s Fabula festival.

Together, Nooteboom and Sassen have published Tumbas, an extensive collection of portraits and photos of poets’ and writers’ graves. Photos from the book will be exhibited at the Galerija Fotografija (Levstikov trg 7) from March 1 to March 26: The grand opening of the exhibition will be at 20:00, on Tuesday, March 1.

ACADEMIC NOMADS

At important international conferences, scientists, researchers and professors, particularly those under 45, usually use the first break to talk about where they had lived and worked in the past years. Some of them move every semester, others remain at the same university (or institute) for a couple of years, while still others live in-between two countries, living in one and regularly flying to work in the other. Those who can afford to put down roots in one place are becoming few and far between. Is this the result of the globalization of the world and of science that forces researchers to compete in the international environment, or are the (younger) scientists, lecturers and researchers the victims of austerity measures at their almae matres compelling them to find a place for themselves in foreign countries? Does the flow of young researchers result in the advancement of science, or is science becoming increasingly tepid, superficial and uniform? How does this affect the lives of those who have decided to become academic nomads and live in the world of uncertainty? Is an academic career, which used to be synonymous with amazing job security, becoming one of the riskiest decisions one could take? And furthermore: what (if anything) are Slovenian universities doing to bring their students back? Is it true that those who leave their Slovenian alma mater find it very difficult to be accepted back, or is this just a myth?

About the guests and the host:

Srećko Horvat (1983), Croatian philosopher, journalist and activist, is not only one of the most conspicuous voices from the region of former Yugoslavia, but also one of the most recognisable thinkers of his generation. He has written a number of books, including What Does Europe Want (Što Europa želi, 2013), which he has co-authored with Slavoj Žižek and which has already been translated into a number of other languages. Horvat regularly publishes articles in various media: The Guardian, Al Jazeera, New York Times, El Pais, Mladina, etc. He had founded and headed the acclaimed Croatian Subversive Festival with guests such as Slavoj Žižek, Tariq Ali, Alexis Cipras and Oliver Stone. Horvat is currently the head of Philosophical Theatre, a programme of the Croatian National Theatre (HNK) that attracts eminent thinkers from all over the world to give lectures in Zagreb. Recently, British publisher Polity published Horvat’s first book written in English, The Radicality of Love, in which the author deals with the attitudes of 20^th century revolutionaries, from Lenin to Che Guevara, towards love.

Maja Petrović-Šteger is a social anthropologist with plenty of research and fieldwork experience from Serbia, Tasmania and Switzerland who specializes in matters related to anthropology of the body, medical anthropology and legal anthropology. She has researched contexts in which the body becomes a polygon for various political, legal, scientific and artistic practices. She has lectured at Cambridge and at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Faculty of the Arts of the University of Ljubljana, and has been guest lecturer at Oxford, Bilbao, Yale, Osaka, Linz, Oslo, etc.

Manca G. Renko is a historian (research and teaching assistant for 19^th and 20^th century subjects at the Department of History of the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Primorska) and editor in chief of AirBeletrina. She occasionally writes and translates as well.

There'll probably be no shortage of readers who would subtitle the Viktor Bubanj Boulevard as a "travelogue of a Yugo-nostalgic and vagabond of the Balkans". Others would call it a collection of stories of the generations from before, during and after the dissolution of Yugoslavia. Still others would focus on the subjects of foreignness and the loss and subsequent search for any kind of familiar, national and personal identity. However, all of them would be won over by Pančić's disgust for human stupidity that sometimes seeps through the cracks of his pervasive ode to humanity, which he resolutely defends against the brutality of political ideas, as stated by Ante Tomić in the foreword to the Croatian edition.

The author will present her latest work, the comic A Letter to Adna, at 11:00, on March 5, in café Pritličje.

A Letter to Adna is a graphic novel dealing with the alarming situation in the Middle East from which refugees are fleeing to European countries.
The story is told by Adna's late guardian, who had left the girl with a letter that she would receive in the event of her death, and with a few suggestions about what to pay attention to, should Adna decide to flee. The narrative thus consists of two parts: the first part gives us the text of the letter that ends Adna's already less than carefree childhood. And the second part provides instructions that leave no doubt to the double standards and warped perception that Adna would encounter in the countries she's leaving for. Nevertheless, the story concludes with an enduring desire for freedom and fairness that leads Adna to embark on her uncertain journey.

The conversation with Samira Kentrić and Vasja Badalič will be led by Aljoša Harlamov.

Lars von Trier’s film, a noir musical created in 2000 and honoured with a Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, follows Selma Ježkova (Björk), a Czech woman who had emigrated to America for her son to get surgery for an eye disease, that Selma herself shares, to stop it from progressing and eventually blinding him. She gives up her own happiness for her son’s sake, working days and nights at the factory to make enough money for the surgery. She only finds solace in musicals, which she regularly sees together with her friend Kathy. Selma and her son live in a rental trailer parked on land owned by policeman Bill and his wife. Culture = Aesthetic Enjoyment + Economic Impact

Ljubljana has recently been awarded UNESCO’s permanent title of City of Literature, thus joining UNESCO’s Creative Cities Network. A Slovenian city (Maribor) has also been the European Capital of Culture, and the country has participated at the Milano EXPO and the Venice Biennale and is currently planning a presentation at the world’s biggest book fair in Frankfurt. According to the Turizem Ljubljana institute, the number of art tourists is on the increase and currently stands at about 1% of all tourists visiting Ljubljana.

All of the above led us to put the intangible capital of the arts and creativity industry aside and consider their potential and actual economic impact. Starting point for consideration: Arts are not just a drain on the public budget – they contribute to it as well.

Why should this be a reason to use public funds to subsidize the arts? How can the arts contribute to economic growth or stability? How many people are employed by the Slovene arts and creativity industries? Do we (know how to) measure the contribution of the arts to the budget? Are these questions beside the point and merely serve to cheapen the essence of the arts – our aesthetic enjoyment?

Discussion participants: AIDAN CERAR (Regional Creative Economy Centre of the Ljubljana Region), MIHA MAZZINI (writer and journalist, Vice-President of the Slovenian Organization of Authors and Publishers for Reproduction – SAZOR), EVA MATJAŽ (cofounder of the Poligon creative centre and Slovenia Coworking and Crowdfunding inititives), NATALIJA MEDICA (Ministry of Economic Development and Technology, Directorate for Entrepreneurship, Competitiveness and Technology), ANDREJ SRAKAR (Institute for Economic Research of the Ljubljana Faculty of Economics).
