Dorota Masłowska

Dorota Masłowska (born 1983) is a Polish writer and playwright. Born in Wejherowo, she studied culture studies at the  Warsaw University. She first appeared in the mass-media when her debut book "Snow White and Russian Red" was published. Largely controversial, mostly because of the language seen by many as vulgar, cynical and simple, the book was praised by many intellectuals as innovative and fresh; it became a best-seller in Poland and won Masłowska several notable awards. It was almost immediately translated onto several languages, including French, German, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Russian, English, Hungarian and Czech. Wojna polsko-ruska was made into a movie, directed by Xawery Zulawski. The film appeared in 2009 and was succesfully screened in Cannes as well as in the US. Her second book  Queen's Peacock/Queen?s Pukock, a rap poem first published in 2005 won her a most prestigious Polish literary Award NIKE 2006. Her second play No matter how hard we try, written for TR Warszawa and Schaubuehne Berlin, was staged in Berlin and Warsaw, March 2009.  The play was awarded the Best Contemporary Written Drama by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.
